The Chief Guest for the evening was Ms. Alokananda Roy, danseuse and social reformer.
Ms. Roy spoke about her journey from a gold medallist student to a revered dance therapist and social reformer which was truly inspiring. How through her organisation Touch Word she has made significant contributions in the rehabilitation of prisoners and their families and has used art as a powerful medium for social change and rehabilitation.
The evening was brought alive with classical folk rendition by SRITA’s RAMYANI dance troupe who transported the guests to a rural atmosphere akin to Bengal.
Day-1 ended with fellowship, DJ music, dancing and Dinner.
Day-2 was all about formal wear and back to back sessions from eminent speakers from far and wide.
The Eminent speakers spread through the morning and after sessions.
First up, the Keynote Speaker Lucy Brazier’s topic was Value Proposition. Lucy Brazier, OBE, is CEO of Marcham Publication. She is an eminent speaker across the globe, both to Executive Assistant professionals and Corporates, on how to increase EA visibility and acknowledge their contributions. Executive Assistants being an invaluable cog in the corporate wheel, need more acknowledgement for what they bring to the table but first, she/he needs to understand her/his own value and to count herself/himself to be more than worthy. Many EAs are moving into managerial positions when an organisation recognizes their talent and enterprise and they need to demand that move as well, instead of waiting their turn.
Second, Sushweta Chakraborty, an Energy Coach and Spiritual Mentor and a Reiki and Crystal therapy Grandmaster, spoke about the need for each individual to realize that judging comments heard from people close to us growing up shape us to become adults with limiting beliefs on her topic - Keeping Calm in a Storm. How to break out of those beliefs by transforming our thoughts with positive affirmations and other tools like pranayama and mudras is what she assured the audience could change mindsets. Positivity begets positivity and influences our reactions to adverse situations.
Third speaker Amitav Mukherji, EVP and Corporate Head – HR, ITC Limited, spoke about the Evolving role of Executive Assistants. From stenographers whose roles were relegated to and limited by manual help such as typewriters, telex and fax to the computerized revolution and now AI generated applications and sophisticated tools at hand. The Assistant’s role is increasingly based on managerial judgments to independently work, relieving her seniors from routine and onerous tasks. He feels that as Assistants master new technology, they increase their value to the organisation and make themselves even more indispensable.
Next speaker was Doma Wang, voted among India’s Top 20 Chefs by Vir Sanghvi. She spoke of her journey from cooking from her kitchen, taking orders on the home landline and personally delivering on her Kinetic Honda scooter, to owning 3 separate outlets of Blue Poppy Thakali and Boma Asia Bakery. With a loyal clientele and equally loyal employees who have remained with her from her initial years, she has grown from strength to strength with perseverance, food ethics and fortitude. She also let the audience into her secret venture: franchise in other metro cities in India, starting with Delhi.
The last speaker was Dr. Sonia Mathai, Consultant, Department of Preventive Oncology, Tata Medical Center, Kolkata. She explained that the highest incidences of cancer in women were breast and cervical cancer. Both these could be mitigated by early detection through mammograms and pap smears, respectively. With HPV vaccinations given at the right time, cervical cancer could be eliminated with herd immunity but what is of the essence, is awareness and right action. Most women ignore their health, putting themselves last, and hence when they finally arrive at the doctor’s clinic, it is at a late and critical stage.
After lunch, there was the National BPC Contest for the various initiatives taken up by all the Chapters. Each Chapter showcased their initiatives through presentation and posters put up in the hall. The contest was judged by Ms. Shukla Chattopadhyay, Ms. Reshma Narwani and Mr. Ayush Sarda and Pune Chapter came out victorious.
Whilst the BPC contest was going on there was Bazaar - an array of stalls showcasing Bengal’s culture for members to shop. The proceeds from these stalls, contributed by the chapter, went towards Brave Souls – an organisation working with Acid Victim Survivors which was selected by the Hosts – West Bengal Chapter.
Day 2 ended with Chapter performance to the theme “Back to School” which was all fun and members were once again rewarded with lots of gifts and treats.
Day 3 started early with members trying to rush through breakfast and getting organised for chapter photo.
Thereafter members were put in various buses for city tour and then the long journey ended at The Rajbari Bawali for a Zamindari Heritage property and a grand Bengali mahabhoj.
After lunch, there was group discussion with representation from each chapter on the convention theme – Staying Ahead of the Curve, duly moderated by Hyacinth Arya. After High-Tea, members boarded the bus for the journey back to Hotel Vivanta as everyone had to get ready for check-out the next morning.

The CSR was conducted on Saturday 25th November 223. This year the Chapter decided to support the girls of the NGO, Brave Souls who work with acid attack survivors.
In order to provide them mental boost and assure them of women empowerment we provided them with provisions and daily wear for them to start their own business. Instead of giving financial support the girls wanted to be assisted in setting up their own business. Sunita, a tea supplier at the railway station was provided with a steel container, tea leaf, sugar and milk powder for a month. It is expected that out of their earnings they will replenish these items and set up their own business.
Let’s all pray for these girls.
Grocery items, hosiery items, bed linen and many items were provided by the Chapter out of the contribution received from our members and external donors.
We thank once again for the generous contribution received from our members.

ORGONOMICS : ORGANISATION + ECONOMICS
Hotel PrimePark
It was overwhelming to see 30+ members in this learning and unlearning program scheduled to give each of us who have attended a new perspective on the effects of Social Media on our children, the children of challenged communities living in the same city and ending the day with how to Brand Me – which we need to remind ourselves....A refresher presentation on our Goals and Purpose was put up just to ensure we have ‘SMART’ goals and are on track.
MRS. FARISHTA DASTUR MUKHERJI – speaker of the first session started with meditation which was much required by us as we found ourselves much relaxed to continue with the session. She spoke about the positives of the internet and the physical and emotional symptoms of Internet Addiction Disorder. She also presented data on research based evidence on the number of clicks or swiping of phone an individual does in a day and the number is 5427 times……. a huge number. Many of us who have young children and grand-children could relate to the session and pertinent questions were asked to clarify ourselves. A very interactive session which helped each of us to understand the effects that is taking place in the world today and in times to come.
MRS. URMI BASU – Founder of New Light an NGO working with women and girls (also boys) in the red light district to Kalighat and Sonagachi. New Light has been working with these challenged women and girls for over 20 years. Over the years, Urmi personally and on behalf of New Light has received illustrious accolades from the Government of India and overseas. Her main vision is to see that girls have a safe haven to life and have dignity and respect in society; she came to talk about AANCHAL CREATIVES a project which helps the women/girls to be economically independent. The project is engaged with 6 girls who are being trained to cut, stitch and design clothing of daily use. The older women are engaged in doing ‘katha’ work such as sheets, stole, tablecloths, pet covering, etc. She appealed to the ladies to help in getting old silk/cotton sarees to help them. She will also be providing the budget required for the 6 girls to be engaged in this project. This could be our 2nd project!!!
MS. SANGEETA MUKHERJEE – member of IASAP WB Chapter for over 25 years. She has worked in the corporate world for over 30 years and now an entrepreneur in the travel industry. She believes that all of us have skills and are experts in certain areas of life which we do not talk about or even mention or maybe we have not reflected. It is important to BRAND ME in today’s world to keep our position in our work life and home life marketed in the right perspective. Branding yourself keeps you current in your field, opens doors for you, and creates a lasting impression on potential and existing clients. Sangeeta mentioned about the three ‘C’... consistency, clarity and character. The world of Personal Assistants, Personal Secretaries, Secretary, EA have evolved and we have come a long way – today the role has changed and dynamics of the roles has changed too. Therefore, Brand Me is very relevant in todays context to reach the goal we want to achieve!!!
All work and no play would have been a dull day – Sangeeta spruced up an energetic game of balloon and toothpick. The ladies all blew the balloons and were given a toothpick. The instruction was the lady with the balloon at the end of the game would be the winner. Our ladies, of course took the toothpick and burst their fellow members balloon. The objective of this game was to ensure that we work as a team. If nobody burst the others balloon we would all be winners!!!
PrimePark was a very convenient venue chosen and the lunch very excellent. Everybody enjoyed the day and went back with a environment-friendly gift of a plant.

SHUT UP... MOVE ON
Hotel Niharika
Mrs Varsha Bhalla … Hotel Niharika and a load of very enthusiastic ladies from IASAP-West Bengal Chapter. A great combination.
Mrs Bhalla very ably guided us through a very entertaining and interesting presentation based on the book ‘Shut Up .. Move On’ written by Paul McGee.
Perhaps, the most important sentence that drove home the fact that we need to take full responsibility for the life we live is this : ‘Life is a matter of choice and every choice you make makes you. You are the sum of all your choices’.
...
However, more often than not, the choices we make are based on many factors, namely,
♦ Our upbringing
♦ Our environment
♦ Peer pressure
♦ Family obligations
and other such influences. In other words, we operate on ‘auto-pilot’. We go about our daily lives doing the same things for the same people in exactly the way that is expected of us over and over and over … till we feel the urge to scream!
Some important observations and take-aways from the presentation are:-
♦ We must take charge of our life – its’ the only one we’ve got
♦ We must take charge of our way of thinking – our thoughts become our deeds
♦ We must understand how setbacks affect us to enable us to recover from them
♦ Changes can ONLY come through ACTION – and not INTENTION – ever heard the saying that “the road to hell is paved with good intentions – hehehe’
♦ We must ‘Ditch Doris Day’ – Never adopt the ‘Whatever will be, will be’ path. We must strike out boldly, put ourselves on the ‘important person’ list and treat ourselves well. Only if we love and respect ourselves, will others learn to love us the same way.
♦ Don’t be the victim. Not everyone is out to get you
♦ Make sure the most important person you talk to is – Yourself
♦ Stop giving too much attention to negativity of any kind – it’s what gives it power over you
♦ Get out of your head and get into the moment. Sieze it and make it count.
So, the moral of the story is ‘If you want something you’ve never had, You have to do things you’ve never done’
Go ahead – love yourself, treat yourself, place yourself on your own priority list, quit whining and complaining, speak positive things to yourself – your body is listening, don’t procrastinate on these tips. You are more beautiful than you think. In other words, SHUT UP … MOVE ON

‘Communication is the engine oil that runs profession and personal lives, and the role of an EA is in the business of communication.’ EAs are the catalyst for building an effective network. She explained the main barrier that stops a person from effectively communicating is the individual herself. The cornerstone for effective communication is by following the 5 Ws and 1 H – What Where, When, Why Who and How and not basing things on assumptions. Various guidelines were shared as how to be a confident communicator - to overcome one’s fears; clarifying the facts before engaging in a meaningful communication. Two aspects shared here were ‘Speak to express’ and ‘build relationships’ - ‘People will forget what you said but never how you made them feel’. She explained confidence comes when you know the subject and for this one needs to listen, follow the 5Ws + 1H and not given in to ‘verbal diarrhoea’ One needs to speak clearly, concisely and with clarity.
Confidence has to be built as language is not the once source of expression. Body language, eye contact, a friendly smile speaks volumes. To build confidence once has to face ones fears before the emotional mind takes full control. One should speak from the heart and look for a win win solutions in order to build relationships.
Brenda conversed with the group about self compassion Self care / self-respect and dignity. Rejection must not be taken personally. One should be true to one’s values. With a certain degree of vulnerability comes connection which is easy for others to share and that again helps in building relationship. She cautioned the listeners that one needs to set boundaries so that one is not misled or taken advantage. Gratitude must never be forgotten and should be always expressed.
The Chairperson thanked Brenda Mendes for the engaging session and also thanked Nina Guha for contacting the speaker for the evening. A total of 77 participants from other Chapters attended the session.

A new word was added to our vocabulary i.e Pandemic. Towards the end of 2020 we learned another new word i.e. New Normal. A way of life most of us had no option but embrace.

CSR 2020
at Chhaya – Animal Hospital, Aswathberia, South 24 Parganas
For the first time IASAP - West Bengal Chapter is proud to be associated with People for the Respect & Care of Animals (PRCA), a registered charitable trust. Under the aegis of this trust, Chhaya, an animal hospital and shelter was established in 2008.
As the animal population increases on the streets, so do the problems faced by them. There is a need for a place where these animals can be kept safe and given the requisite medical treatment and allowed to make a recovery. Chhaya was set up to fulfil this very need by rescuing bruised, battered, broken animals lying helplessly on the streets of Kolkata by bringing them to the hospital and returning them back once cured.
Chhaya is situated on a 2.5 acre plot in village Aswathaberia, on the outer fringes of Kolkata.
We appealed to our members to open their hearts to the well-being of those who cannot speak for themselves. Collectively a sum of Rs. 40000/- was collected towards the cause. A group of IASAP’ians from the chapter personally made a visit to the Animal Hospital to hand over the cheque to Dr. Sharda Radhakrishna.
Financial Workshop 2020
Zoom Workshop by Ms. Chanchala Sharma
Post our AGM, the newly elected Managing Committee organized the first event for our members on Friday 2nd October 2020 – ‘Online Financial workshop’ on the virtual platform Zoom a unique virtual lecture meet conducted by Ms. Chanchala Sharma, an IIM Calcutta alumnus and a senior banker for close to two decades who is also an self-confessed animal lover who dedicates her free time towards prevention and protection of animals.
Due to the informative and interactive nature of the session our Chapter Chairperson extended the Zoom link to the other Chapters from IASAP as well as it was a much needed workshop in keeping with the difficult times we have all been faced with. Ms. Sharma shared her experience and knowledge and took us through a slide presentation patiently explaining to us the changing realities and our need to invest wisely. Her presentation had detailed information on various investment options available today against the risk factors involved. She gave us an overview of the current market scenario, the disruption in the overall industry and on the importance of choosing the right options whilst investing our lives savings and earnings to ensure better returns and protect our financial well-being.
The session was well received by our members and there were some very valid questions raised by our members. The main take-away from this workshop was “idle money is unproductive money” and clearly defined never to confuse Saving v/s Investment – saving is setting aside money for an emergency while investing is buying assets such as bonds, mutual funds or real estate to create more wealth.
Our grateful thanks to Ms. Chanchala Sharma for her time and knowledge, to Committee Member Ms. Parna Mookerjee for connecting us with Ms. Sharma and last but not the least to our members from West Bengal Chapter and all the other Chapters (a total of 60 members) who took time out to join the session and make it a huge success.

International Women's Day 2020
Held at Taki Hotel Sonar Bangla
International Women’s Day was celebrated with much gusto at the recently concluded Annual Offsite Program. 40 Members and guests boarded the bus from outside Lady Brabourne College on 7th March, 2020 and were soon on their way to TAKI – Hotel Sonar Bangla. Although there was rain, spirits were not dampened at all.
After checking in, all reported to the banquet hall where Lidya our resource person was ready to start the session “NONE OF US IS AS SMART AS ANY OF US’. A great learning session with plenty of bonding. The take away from here was ‘alone we can do it but collectively we can achieve more and faster’.
The evening brought snacks and tea after which the ladies were off to relax and freshen up. The evening was a high spirited one. Our DJ Lorraine was well prepared with music to suit all tastes and moods and the ladies showed their appreciation by participating and gyrating to the thumping beats. All enjoyed the evening and retired to bed after a sumptuous dinner, tired but ready to face tomorrow.
8.00 am – 8th March : After wishing each other a very happy woman’s day all were ready for some meditation and Zumba conducted by our expert Lorraine White. After breakfast the purple brigade descended in full force to celebrate Women’s Day. Annual Christmas Lunch 2019
Held at Perfect Place in Town
Soaking in the spirit of Christmas our wonderful ladies gathered at the Annual Christmas lunch held on 15th December at PPT (Perfect Place in Town).
This year the theme was White Christmas and truly we had the shades of white amidst a riot of Santa’s colours.
The hall was brightly lit decorated with glitter, the reindeers, the holly but nothing matched the exuberance when more than 50 ladies, children and guests trouped in ‘on a high’ with the Christmas spirit. The warmth imparted as greetings were exchanged and old friends caught up with each other and the younger ones introduced to the IASAP gang was infectious.
Games were organised for the young and the old. At the beginning the group played bombing the city followed by a game with biscuits, where the biscuit had to slide down from the forehead to the mouth by just twitching the face muscles. The other games were bursting the balloon which had the entire group roaring with laughter and the grand fashion parade with Christmas props. Extremely innovative games in which the ladies wholeheartedly participated and enjoyed. West Bengal Chapter is so privileged to have very sporting ladies.
The evergreen Santa made his appearance and all ladies were gifted with a box of perfumed Candles, to make the season even sweeter.
A delicious spread of continental buffet followed by the traditional slice of Christmas Cake ended the perfect day.

A brief EGM to appoint the Auditors – A K Virmani & Co., followed by an interactive session with Ms Farishta Dastur Mukherji, a Counsellor and Psychotherapist, who took us through Life Transitions. Members comfortably shared real life experiences of the Emotional, Social, Intellectual and Physical Transitions. Our Chapter was termed as a Safe Space, which in Therapist Terminology means, a comfortable space we create where we can bare our hearts.
In a nutshell, Life’s Transitions are an acceptance of where we are in the “Here and Now”.
With an exclusive Gastronomic Delight being served, Lunch was a much looked forward to part of the package.
The 16th IASAP Administrative Professionals Contest of the West Bengal Chapter was the integral part of the day with 7 Participants all ready to wear the title. We were honoured by the presence of Ms Angela Ghosh & Brigadier Ashish Kumar Dutta, our eminent judges for the event.
After the successfully clearing the earlier rounds and numerous grooming sessions, facing the audience were the most confident, lovely and chic ladies. The decision was tough but then the Winners took it all. Ms Karen Ansar claimed the Title of Winner 2019 of the Regional Chapter along with Best Speaker 2019. 1st Runner Up was Ms Teresa Currie and 2nd Runner Up was Ms Celestina Rawat. Karen & Teresa will be representating the Chapter at the National Levels in October this year. Go for the Kill Ladies, show them how we do it.... The Bengal Tigresses.
Assertiveness vs Aggressiveness
Held at The Big Boss
Two common communication styles are “aggressive” and “assertive.” Although they may appear similar at first glance, the differences in both the approach and the results of these two styles are dramatic. The IASAP - West Bengal Chapter chose to discourse with its 35 odd members on the fine line between Assertive and Aggressive, with none other than the Reputed Dr. Subhrajyoti Mukherjee, a Trained Psychological Counsellor working with the Mental Health Sector for over 10 years.
Dr. Mukherjee conversed with the group on the Ways of Effective Communicating and the Types of Responses to a Communication vis-à-vis being Assertive or Aggressive. The overall understanding of the workshop was that Assertive people state their opinions, while still being respectful of others and Aggressive people ignore others' opinions in favour of their own.
A very dramatic yet entertaining Role Play on Aggressive and Assertive communication was staged by our Effie and Rumela with Arnab Goswami being the Man of the Day amongst the ladies present.
The very sumptuous and gastronomic lunch, served by “The Big Boss”, Hotel, was a delight to add flavour the topic.

Better the Balance - Better the World
IASAP West Bengal Chapter choose the perfect day to project this on International Women’s Day
Thirty five high-spirited, cheerful ladies all dressed in shades of pink headed by our Chairperson Dianne boarded a bus for an eventful fun loving day at “Country Roads”. After a sumptuous bellyful breakfast and a little disport by our very own inhouse trainer Ms Lidya Das, AVP-HR, HSBC, the day began with our CP Dianne welcoming us to the Event and the MC for the Day – Jessie Hiramanek fast tracking the workshop with a meaningful quote which was perfect for the day – God Created Man before Woman because you always make the rough draft before the final masterpiece!!!
Lidya took us through a quiz which gave us insights into a load of knowledgeable information and the correct answers were rewarded with gifts from HSBC. The Wheel of Life Activity gave us a chance to make some rational and thoughtful reflections enabling us to make balances in our work & life on a daily basis. To prioritise the aspects in our lives that need to be worked upon to balance the scales. This activity wound up with each of us writing a quote that was the story of our lives.
Lunch was followed by the Pink Parade utilizing the venue’s scenic beauty for selfies and groupies.
Jessie and Donna enlivened the second half of the Day with their quiz that was rib tickling, informative and thought provoking. All the more enjoyable was the banter for the chocolates.
IASAP has always achieved, through all its events, to create a quench which is insatiable by far. We keep asking for more.
A Big Shout out to IASAP West Bengal and our Chairperson Dianne Hooper.

HELD AT HOTEL CRESTWOOD
REPORT
The IASAP West Bengal chapter workshop was held with much enthusiasm on 19th August at Hotel Crestwood. The workshop featured two extremely accomplished and ingenious resource persons – Ms Iti Misra and Mr Leslie Francis D’Gama. A total of 44 ladies were present at the workshop.
Ms Iti Misra is a multi-talented person with vast experience both in the corporate world and also as a self-made motivational speaker. Iti delivered a talk on ‘Understanding Yourself better – Self Realisation’ where she led the ladies on a journey of introspection – who we think we are; who others think we are and our real self. The ladies were told the importance of loving oneself and building self-esteem which could be achieved once we are aware of our potentials. Only when we love ourselves can we love and radiate happiness to others. One of the keys to happiness is to recollect the good deeds done and the good things that happened at the end of the day. We should also identify the bad qualities of ourselves and try to change them to be a better person.
She also discussed about three types of behaviours - aggressive, submissive and assertive. She shared her personal experiences which gave us a better understanding of how to behave with others in different situations. We, the members, also shared our experiences - both good and bad and this helped us to understand ourselves better. Iti Misra also told us to ponder on those things we always want to do but have not yet done. To analyse why we could not do it and try to achieve that desire, as it will make us a happier and better person.
Post lunch, Mr Leslie Francis D’Gama, formerly a Senior Teacher and a Systems Administrator at St. Xaviers Collegiate School did a session with us on time management and team bonding. We were divided into groups to do interactive exercises on time management which helped us to identify different strategies for managing time and team building. He gave us examples to understand the difference between urgent and important jobs, which we should do immediately, urgent but not important jobs which we could delegate to others, important but not urgent jobs, which we could put reminders, to be done later and to drop the ones that are neither urgent nor important. We learnt that we should always plan ahead, make a to do list and allot specific time for a specific job, to have a successful day. We also had an informative quiz on general knowledge.
It was a Sunday filled with interaction, learning, fun, laughter, good food and happier ladies.

FEEDBACK ANALYSIS
44 members including 6 guests attended the programme, a very good response by IASAP standards.
PROGRAMME 1 – from 10.30 am to 12.45 pm TITLE “SELF REALISATION” – SPEAKER MS. ITI MISRA
32 forms were received and analysed and the overall impression was an “excellent” presentation by Ms. Iti Misra on “Self Realisation” especially as she did not connect thru any electronic medium but made it a very personal interaction. The speaker's message was very clear – that Self Awareness is about the process of understanding self, recognizing one’s strengths and weaknesses. This understanding of self empowers one in their attitude/behavior and makes them confident to meet the challenges of life. It is about self esteem and not ego – if you don’t love yourself, do not expect others to love you. Self awareness strengthens one’s beliefs, value system and spirituality. Change has to come from within - heart, mind, soul and body. She did a pscho-analysis exercise on “Who Am I” an interpretation of understanding self. She made us list our strengths/weakness so that we could use our strengths and improve on our weaknesses. Of course the exercise demands an honest assessment and not one of denial. She spoke of being assertive and not aggressive/submissive. We have to keep evolving and pursue our dreams.

PROGRAMME 2 - from 2 pm to 4 pm TITLE “TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES” - SPEAKER MR. LESLIE D’GAMA
The second session post lunch was conducted by Mr. Leslie D’Gama, Master of Trainers, on “Team Building Activities”, “Time Management” and a Quiz. 32 Feedback forms were received and analysed and the overall impression was that it was a “Great” programme with the active engagement of participants. Mr. D’Gama explained that the essence of Team building is basically to make members a cohesive team to work together interdependently, to strategise and co-operate to accomplish goals. This message was brought out thru fun activities viz. (i) forming 6 varied teams and each team had to showcase their talents and skills to achieve goals. (ii) The second exercise was to make four letters words with the word APOSTLE – basically to ensure collaboration among members. There was also a Quiz on Office terminology/General knowledge and this was an enlightening exercise as we learnt some new words.
He also spoke on Time Management - saying that Time is a very special resource which we cannot store, save or use later. Therefore, good time Management helps in making conscious choices so that we can schedule our tasks in the “Important/Urgent Matrix” of “DO” ‘DELEGATE” DROP AND DELAY according to one’s priority and this helps in reducing stress and being more productive.

LECTURE MEET
The first IASAP West Bengal Chapter event after the formation of the new Committee, was a Lecture Meet with Mr Sujit Sanyal on 17th of June 2018 at Hotel Niharika, from 11.00 am to 3.00 pm. which was attended by 35 ladies.
The Chairperson Dianne Hooper introduced Mr Sujit Sanyal - a Consultant with more than 45 years of experience in advertising and marketing. A successful author with books such as ‘Life in a Rectangle’, ‘Second Strike’ Mr Sanyal informed he was ‘Mothered by the Secretary pool‘ in the formative period of his career and they were the ‘biggest pillars in the organisation’. His books, as per his own statement, were a tribute to the Secretaries who helped him during these times.
Catering to the age group from 35 to 70 years, Mr Sanyal began his session with a quote from Jethro Tull “I am too old to rock and roll but am too young to die” and managed to get the full attention of the ladies. He started his ‘bong connection’ with an adda session encompassing a quiz -reminiscence of the old city of joy and the famous personalities of yesteryears, which were promptly identified by the ladies. The entire quiz was not only informative but filled with amusing anecdotes.
Back to the advertising world Mr Sanyal introduced the basic concepts of advertising and how the end user buys a product not because of the usage but the ‘tag’ it carries as it reflects the persona the user wants to reflect.
The second part of his talk was on Self Motivation and Self Reliance. To survive in life one needs to keep interacting and introspecting. With these lines Mr Sanyal gave a presentation of ordinary people who went on to become extraordinary national heroes and who were his personal motivators – Sprinter Wilma Rudolph who was diagnosed with polio yet won the Olympics in 1956 and 1960 ; Abede Bekela – Ethiopian double Olympic Marathon Champion who overcame poverty to be able to compete in the Olympics and when tragedy struck and deprived him the mobility of his lower body, he competed in archery and table tennis at international sports events. Other personalities included Sudha Chandran, Indira Gandhi and others.
The next session was ‘Power to Dream’ and the power to crystalize the dream. Mr Sanyal emphasised the “Don’ts” which deter the ability to crystalize one’s dream, again with examples.
He stressed that one should not to give away one’s power as Katherine Graham publisher of Washington Post who did not deter and published the Pentagon papers and report on the Watergate scandal, even if it meant jeopardising the investors ; the story of Angelina Jolie who did not shy away from change despite her breast cancer and a troubled marriage and is till today a powerful actress travelling the world continuing her humanitarian works. The “don’ts” included not wasting energy on things one cannot control and not wasting time on pleasing others and removing fear taking calculated risks. Another important aspect was not to dwell on the past but keep taking each day in its stride and not to make the same mistakes again; not to resent other peoples’ success and not give up after a failure.
The sessions were extremely informative and motivating with a steady flow of wit and humour making it a ‘well spent Sunday morning. A sumptuous lunch following a photo session and as is the practice, no IASAP meet / workshop is incomplete without our mandatory lucky draws which brought the interaction to a close.
Mr Sanyal serves as a visiting faculty member of Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication and conducts interactive workshops on varied capsules for leading corporate houses in India and abroad.

April 25th is celebrated the world over as Administrative Professionals Day and to commemorate this day in a fitting manner, IASAP organised a Lecture Meet conducted by Ms. Ipsita Ganguli ex ITC and JW Mariott having worked in the hospitality sector. There was a good response to the programme as 36 members attended this event. We received only 24 feedback forms and based on their feedback the overall impression was a mixed one. Some felt it was good while others were of the opinion that it could have been more interactive. Ms. Ganguli spoke on the topic "Aspire to Inspire" saying that " to Aspire is to rise upto to a great plan/dream and to Inspire is to convey a feeling of joining a higher cause". If both are not present in our lives we lose our soul. She gave illustrations of movies Like "A Beautiful Life” and "A Beautiful Mind" and Poetry to show that one is really put to the test when things are down. It is with both aspiration/inspiration that anything can be accomplished. She spoke of her personal experience of moving out of her comfort zone to aspire for more challenging opportunities and summed it up by this phrase that we should be "The master of our fate and the Captain of our soul". On a scale of 5 the average score was 3.5 (covering pt. 1,2,3, and 4) clearly emphasizing that the workshop on overall session, venue, content and the facilitator was “Above Average”. PEOPLE MATTERS & ME – OFFSITE PROGRAMME
Facilitator : Mr Colin Fitzgerald Topic : People Matters & Me' Day I, Saturday, 3rd Feb
As they boarded the Bus at 0900 hours, little did these 18 unsuspecting yet apprehensive, lively and excited Ladies know that in the next two days they were about to explore and learn about the most important person in their lives – ME. Mr. Colin Fitzgerald, our Facilitator opened the 2-day journey of wisdom, activities and camaraderie with an icebreaker of each one of us drawing an animal that represented us and the qualities that depicted that animal and it surprised us as to how the Animals harmonized with Me.
Colin led us into a session of much thinking about whether we represent "I" or "ME". The exercise and Audio "One Moment In Time" helped us realign ourselves into making ME Important. Where the ME strives to be what the world around expects us to be, not what "I" wants "ME" to be.
A Personality Characteristic Activity was conducted and each one characterized with an animal vis a vis Turtle, Teddy Bear, Shark, Fox or Vulture. The 5 Teams formed out of the animals used their vivid imaginations to enact and voice the personalities of that animal.
The objective was to strengthen self-awareness, understand the real ME, identify individual strengths and weakness and explore areas of growth. The Evening saw 18 matured ladies turn teenagers with the fun activities, lip smacking food, hip trembling music and unabashed brazen involvement of each and every participant.
Day 2, Sunday, 4th Feb started with a run through of the previous day's session and carried on with a Team Initiative called the Colour Game. The Objective was to - win as much as you can. This Game brought about a realization where again ME takes a back seat and goes along with decisions made by the "I's" of the Team. Even the strongest of "ME's" get sidelined when it's the "I" we work with.
They say, Life's a Game but BINGO - Its Serious. We ended the day with a game of Bingo. The stakes were good but the hampers better.
A Largely fun-filled training and learning offsite – we thank Colin for channeling us towards understanding the importance of ME before I.
A Ear Splitting Shout Out to the IASAP Managing Committee and Chairperson Dianne Hooper for organizing an exceptional 2 day affair. The venue was perfect, the food nutritious and the Facilitator - Powerful and Insightful.
We look forward to such Off-site workshops which not only enrich us but also de-stress us from our demanding daily lives.

The speaker used the Big 5 Model, the game of squares and the "Win as Much as you can" activity to show the difference of ME and I. He used the Relationship and Task Graph to depict the Personality types of the Tortoise, The Teddy Bear, The Fox, The Shark and The Eagle to help us identify our strengths with the above in order to align ourselves with the real ME. He did this with debatable sessions where the members participated actively and enthusiastically with a good mix of fun, learning and a hearty verbal sparring. HELD AT: THE BURNT GARLIC RESTAURANT – RASH BEHARI AVENUE
The two days of rain, that caused rescheduling/cancellations of many programmes in and around Kolkata, was unable to cast a dampner on the high spirits of our IASAP Members and guests who turned up in their 'Sunday best' to participate in the Christmas Lunch Party on 10th December, 2017. 59 members and guests of which 5 were kids attended the Christmas Party. Plenty of soft drinks, mocktails and delicious snacks did the rounds. Whilst everyone was busy dancing Jessie had her 'Lucky Spots' chosen and gifts were given to the dancers at the lucky spots, lucky number on the cap.
Soon after Jessie had Santa's corners ready and all were busy gyrating till the music stopped. Then there were bells ringing and kids singing Jingle Bells whilst Ms Santa 'Ho Ho Ho ed' down the chimney stairs distributing sweets along the way. The kids were beaming and could not get enough of her as they reached out for more sweets and a quick grasp of her hand. One kid commented – Santa has very soft hands!!! Shamina did a good job and distributed the gifts to the kids with a promise to come again and grant them their wishes.

We had gifted each of them a food packet, frooti, bedsheet, towel, soaps, boroline and Rs. 300/- each. They were very happy to see us and we spent some time chatting with them. Some of ladies told us they help with the cutting of the vegetables for their meals, to keep themselves busy and praised Mrs Durga Naskar for taking care of them. Some of them have children but have been put into the Ashram since they do not want to keep them alone at home. One lady told us afer her husband's dealth she lived here for the last 15 years. One lady broke her leg and could not walk nor could her leg be operated since she was very old and weak. Tears filled my eye to see one gentleman sitting on his bed looking very depressed. When I asked him what was wrong, he showed me his amputated leg. He had a bus accident while returning from work and unfortunately his employer did not retain him or give me any compensation. His sister kept him in this place as there was nobody to take care of him. We met another old man who looked very happy and content with life and said he was 82 yrs and fit. His daughter would visit him periodically and he was happy to be with other senior citizens. They told us to visit them again as they were lonely.
Though many members could not personally visit the Ashram, they generously contributed towards the CSR activity. Thank you everyone for your presence and contributions that brought a smile on the face of many senior citizens.

CELEBRATING – ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS’ WEEK – 26/4 – 29/4
The celebrations for Administrative Professionals’ Week began with the screening of the film “SONATA” on 26th April, 2017 at INOX INSIGNIA. Hilarious as it was we kept relating the lives of the stage actors to some of our very own members … and did we enjoy, squealing at the actions and dialogue. Mugs of ‘Pop-Corn’ were overflowing and the chilled aerated drinks were gulped to quench the thirst.
Continuing with the celebrations for Administrative Professionals’ Week members attended a Lecture Meet by none other than Mr. Shiladitya Bhattacharya, Managing Partner – Positive Strokes. He emphasized that we have a choice to push our boundaries for making life more meaningful and have strong faith which means complete surrender. We should never forget our primal responsibility. He spoke on Time Management and Gratitude. Emotionally, we must have peace in our hearts to give peace to others by not being judgmental. And last but not the least the power of the mind. Workshop
Resource Person : COLIN FITZGERALD – HR CONSULTANT
Venue : Hotel Niharika, Kolkata
Content : Who is me ? Have I lost the original Me ? Who do I want to see ? Do I really see ME in the mirror or my superficial self?
After refreshing tea /coffee and a light snack all 34 ladies settled down to understand “My Personality”. And so the day unfolded with Colin creating windmills in our minds by keeping us all involved in deep thought, discussions and trying to fathom who is the real me. They concentrated and focused on the presentations made by Colin and notes were tallied. Views were exchanged and all took part in the healthy arguments whilst the mediator – Colin ‘Arnab Goswami’ Fitzgerald was in total control at all times.
Too soon the lip-smacking lunch was announced and as usual devoured. For the second session tables were removed and all were asked to remain in their seats. Now came the hour to discover who I am. The ladies were left to group themselves in the following categories : INTUITIVE / SENSITIVE / INTRAVERSION / EXTRAVERSION / THINKING / FEELING - Colin’s personality presentations and the interpretations of the categories kept all of us totally engaged wondering WHO AM I - Whilst some of the members knew who they were many were left wondering who am I as doubt crept in.
The explanations of the various aspects of one’s personality were very appropriate and well received. Tea was ready and we had to bring the curtains down on a day that was fun-filled, interactive, mesmerizing, motivating and inspiring. There were pleas for many more such workshops. The ladies enjoyed the day and felt that they had not engaged in such banter and laughter for a long time.
Colin wrapped up the workshop and left us with the inspiring quote – Never change your originality for the sake of others, because no one can play your role better than you. So be yourself, You are the best !
No IASAP event is ever over till the prizes are given away. The Lucky draw winners were Indrani Sinha / Rumela Mukherjee & Viroo Medhora. Our thanks to Colin for such an inspiring and motivational workshop.

CSR EVENT
The inclement weather and slushy roads on Sunday 7th August, 2016 was no deterrent for the committed members of IASAP. At 1045 hrs.some ladies assembled outside Christ the King Church to be directed to 'NAVJEEVAN' by MC Members whilst others found their way directly. By 1100 hrs hot coffee and snack boxes were served to all the 37 members and 11 guests. The kids' boxes were handed over to Sister Lizzy for distribution later.
Managed by "Sisters of the Cross of Chavanud", Navjeevan is a home for street girl children in Kolkata and Bangalore. Sr. Lizzy who is in-charge of the Kolkata home informed us about the work being done for the holistic growth and development of the street girl children enabling them to have a better life. The parents of the children visit them once a month and the children are permitted to go home but naturally they prefer to stay at NAVJEEVAN. The eldest who is also the first girl child taken in at NAVJEEVAN is now in Andhra Pradesh doing her BA.
The children are monitored for about a year and then admitted to various schools in and around the area. The children are very talented as was apparent from the various trophies/medals/awards displayed in the parlour.
Coffee and snacks over all proceeded upstairs to witness the dance item the girls had specially prepared for the aunties and didis. Twinkle (daughter of Dhanalaxmi) opted to teach some of them a few dance steps. Thereafter the girls played 'Musical Chairs (arms)' and Monte Carlo. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the fun and frolic. Prizes were distributed to deserved winners and all the girls received a goody bag containing pencils, pens, exercise books, drawing books, sweets, chocolate, Complan and juice. LECTURE MEET
The weekend started with incessant rains, but this did not deter the enthusiasm of the ladies of IASAP WB Chapter from attending the first lecture meet for the year 2016-17 on Sunday, 3rd July 2016. As the hour (11 am) was fast approaching, we saw the ladies rolling in to Niharika Hotel, our favourite venue, each one narrating their challenge to reach on time in the un-stoppable rains since morning.
After normal registrations, meet and greet over tea /coffee with delicious snacks, the main program of the day kicked-off. We had with us Ms. Janet Gasper Chowdhury, Chief People Officer of Magma Fincorp Limited, to give us a session on "Second Innings".
What is "Second Innings" what does it really mean. The objective of this session was to make us aware of diverse opportunities, re-launching our careers with renewed confidence and enthusiasm, returning to the workforce after personal commitments or even change paths to other career options. This may require the need to read, gain knowledge, additional training or even get another qualification depending on what we are considering. A Jane Fonda clip summed it all up.
Janet started the session with a short physical exercise for all and then the introductions which was a little different. We had to say something interesting about ourselves, some of the introductions were really interesting and we came to know something more about our friends. Then a bowl went around which had chits, and we had to answer the questions that were asked in the chits picked by us. A time bound round (2 mins) and Bemvinda's team emerged winners. This again was real fun. We continued with group discussion and workshops. Every workshop that was shown taught us something new, and we as individuals opened up and did things which we had never done or even thought of. We learned that there is potentiality and power within us to do something new, and if we can visualise it, we will definitely achieve it. We were encouraged to live like eagles and to make this dream a reality all were given EAGLE STICKERS to be a constant reminder.
We broke for a sumptuous lunch, duringwhichVistara Airlines, being new in the aviation industry and having a tie-up with Singapore Airlines, gave us a short presentation on their operations and their future plans. And as is well known – no IASAP event is done till the bags are given away. VISTARA had goodie bags for all the participants.
Sadly, all goods things must come to an end, and that is what happened. We left Niharika with plenty of enthusiasm and power- promising ourselves to SOAR HIGH.

Offsite "My Work, My Life"
Resource person : Ms. Jhanvi Trivedi Ghosh, Head - Services & HealthCare Hospitality, Aviation & Travel, ABC Consultants
Topic 'My Life – My Work'
Day I, Saturday, 30th January saw 12 enthusiastic and excited members + 1 Resource Person, Ms. Jhanvi Trivedi Ghosh, start a 2-day journey of learning, activities and togetherness. Silent apprehensions were there as to how this mixed group of young and not-so-young would spend the next 2 days in each other's company but Jhanvi took care of that and put us all at ease with the ice-breaker session. Jhanvi gave us new identity tags to wear for the offsite, viz. Joy, Smile, Inspire, Patience, Mercy, Peace, Freedom, Connect, Serve, etc. and it amazed us how apt each new name matched with our own lives !
Setting the scene for Stage I:
Do I really want to simplify my life or wallow in self pity - or should I"Approach work/life balance" by:
- Getting started by identifying key issues, understanding the challenges and develop strategies to overcome the challenges and then put them into action plans.
- Keeping in mind that work-life balance is time crucial and critical to each profession; gauge the circumstances and work towards solving problems and avoiding anxiety-causing situations at work and home.
- Understand your problems/challenges, work on your work-life balance and don't always look for a "perfect" situation as perfection at times can cause disharmony, stress and tension be it at work or at home.
- Draw a 'tree of life' and do a self-introspection, write your Values against the roots, your Skills against the tree trunkand your Goals on the fruits and see how your values and skills help you achieve your goals in life.
- Upgrade yourself and your value will go up and people will like to connect with your cause.
- Help each other in your respective skills and work-life situations instead of pulling one another down that is how an organization grows; be an organization with a cause, with an aim to be successful and a pride to be a part of it!!
Day 2, Sunday, 31st January started with community service. Members were requested to help clean the lawns of the resort that had been strewn with garbage left over by picnic parties the previous day.
After a brief recap of the previous day's session, Jhanvi started with a quote from Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar': "the evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones". Though not so true in today's world as people are remembered and appreciated for the good work (and not the evil) they have done in their life.
Continuing from the previous day's session on how to maintain a good work-life balance, Jhanvi emphasized:
- There is no correct formula for work-life balance. Just look for individual situations and start your goals now, as each one's life is unique to oneself.
- Know your limitations and don't hesitate to say "NO" with a smile
- Share your problems with people you are comfortable with without attaching emotions to it.
Each participant was then given a card with a specific message or task to do which would help push us out of our comfort zone. We were then requested to share with the rest of the group once we had completed the task during the course of the next few days.
The finale saw four groups of three members each putting their interpersonal and team-bonding skills to work, using newspapers and toothpicks only, to make creative clothes. The outcome was amazing ideas from all the 4 teams.
Chinese whispers and dumb charades followed with a lot of fun and laughter.
Overall a great training and learning offsite – thank you Jhanvi for helping us understand our work-life balance more clearly and taking out the humane aspect from each one of us.
Thank you the Corpus Fund Committee for organizing an excellent 2-day experience – good venue, good food, excellent Resource Person, and plenty of activities (including tombola of course!)at the end of the day with lots of prizes won. We look forward to more such activities!!
Christmas Party
Christmas is a time of laughter, joy and celebration. The MC, Programme Sub-Committee and PR Sub-Committee of IASAP, as usual, did a splendid job by organising a Christmas Party for their Members.
'The Village'(an open air section of a hall in The Conclave) was decorated with balloons, tinsels, posters of Santa Claus and a beautiful Christmas tree, completely breath-taking. The weather was just perfect for an evening party. They walked in wearing something red, green and white yes that was the dress code for the evening.Registration was done as smooth as possible and Raffle tickets were purchased beyond the MC's expectation as so many exciting prizes were to be won.
This time instead of Santa Claus we invited 'Shanti Claus' to our party to distribute gifts to our wonderful children after she got them all excited with her appearance and gesture. The kids were intrigued seeing her and had lots of questions regarding "Santa Claus being a lady". It was fun listening to their questions and some members answering them.
The Master of Ceremony (MC) was Dianne Hooper whoset the ball rolling by handing out Christmas carols song sheets to all. Silent night holy night, deck the halls with boughs of holly, jingle bells, the first noel, Here comes Shanti Claus (Santa Claus changed to Shanti Claus) etc. were sung in A cappella which sounded heavenly as both children and adults sang in harmony.
After the melodious singing the floor was set on fire by the members, guests and children dancing to the tune of the latest Bollywood songs. Everyone was so engrossed dancing that the MC took advantage of this enthusiasm and played two games Lucky Spot Dance where the winners were Carol Highland and Valerie Paris and Monte Carlo winner was Judith Mitra.
In the midst of all the fun and frolic, a cake was passed around and each member was asked to guess the weight of the cake. Before the ladies could grab their seats after dancing / giggling and taking out selfies, the MC made four groups and gave each group two rolls of toilet papers and explained the game to them. Each team had to choose a snowman and wrap their showman with the toilet paper rolls; the best team would win attractive prizes, Brunele& Team won the competition.
Parties are incomplete without food and drinks but in our party the scene was different. Everyone was having a wonderful time that food did not matter. MC had to announce dinner was laid out but before the guests could head to the dinner counter the winner of the guess the cake weight was announced and Shamina Hussain took away the sweet delight, she guessed the weight right, 1.75 kgs.
Many thanks to SALDANHA and KATHLEEN for the supply of delicious Christmas Cakes which were thoroughly enjoyed by the winners.

"Nawabi Nite"
With the hangover of the Hyderabad Convention still on, IASAP WB Chapter hosted another colourful event "NAWABI NITE" on 31st October 2015. This began mainly to recollect and share the nostalgic moments and the lovely time spent at the Convention by those who attended, and to give an essence of the convention to those whomissed it but got an added importance for conducting an Orientation for all new members!
The venue was "Hotel Niharika", menu "Hyderabadi" and theme and dress code for the day was "Ethnic – Hyderabadi Style".
Ladies dressed in ghagras, lehangas, dhoti pants, sarees clad in their ethnic best started rolling in being greeted with a 'Topi' and 'Rumaal' at the Registration Desk. Withregistrations and stampings complete, meet and greet sessions over, the ladies settled down taking their seatsto continue with the Agenda of the day.
Chairperson Bemvinda Pereira greeted and welcomed all the ladies with her usual smile, and requested the SAPC Regional finalists to share their experiences and journey through the contest. New members were welcomed once more, badges given to them and were also asked to say a few words about themselves. Some old members who were out of touch with the IASAP for a while also came and re-registered themselves.
Now began the serious part - Vice Chairperson MohuaShomeLalvani, read outthe MOA. Doubts raised by the members, were clarified by Mohua. We now have a better understanding of the MOA.
No IASAP function is ever complete without the 'Lucky Draw' prizes and as promised earlier - prizes for the best dressed Begum Sahibas. Rumaals were waved as Jayanti Sen and Catherine Symeswho emerged the lucky draw winners. At a show of hands, catcalling and vigorous waving of 'Rumaals' Dianne Hooper and Catherine Symes were declared the best dressed Begums – pity there were no Badshahs around !!
By this time the aroma of the sumptuous food was already filling the air and ladies were eager to hit the Dinner table. Music switched "ON" the naughty group (as they were named at the Hyderabad Convention) hit the floor to dance to the tunes, while others enjoyed the food.
While we would like to thank our MC members for organising such a wonderful night, thanks to all those who attended without whom I am sure the evening would not have been so eventful as it was, thanks to Hotel Niharika who as always are there to support us in every possible way, lastly but not the least thanks to all of us who keep IASAP West Bengal Chapter going, three cheers for IASAP WB Chapter Hip Hip Hooray, Hip Hip Hooray,Hip Hip Hooray.
Like all things must come to an end, dinner over, music stopped, lights dimmed, another round of greeting, this time, Goodnight and Goodbye, till we meet again !
